Installing SharePoint 2010 Server in a small farm environment

I had 2 virtual machines loaded on Hyper-V as VM-DEV5 and VM-DEV6. VM-DEV5 was used for Active Directory and Databases and VM-DEV6 was SharePoint 2010( APP and WFE)

Active Directory :VM-DEV5

Roles can and should be added from Server Manager (but they can also be initiated from the Initial Configuration Tasks wizard that auto-opens the first time you log on to the server).

  1. Open Server Manager by clicking the icon in the Quick Launch toolbar, or from the Administrative Tools folder.
  2. Wait till it finishes loading, then click on Roles > Add Roles link.

  1. Going back to Server Manager, click on the Active Directory Domain Services link, and note that there’s no information linked to it, because the DCPROMO command has not been run yet.

Database :VM-DEV5

  1. Install SQL Server 2008 R2 database on VM-DEV5 and install Cumulative updates after the SP1 install. I had used sharepoint2010d\setupadmin to install database.
  2. Create a new SQL server instance using the database install. (VM-DEV5\MOSSINTRA).
  3. Make sure you the user as sharepoint2010d\sqladmin( that makes this account sysadmin)
  4. Create logins for sharepoint2010d\sharepointadmin, sharepoint2010d\serviceadmin,sharepoint2010d\searchadmin and sharepoint2010d\setupadmin
  5. Assign dbcreator and securityadmin roles to the all sharepoint2010d\sharepointadmin and sharepoint2010d\setupadmin

SharePoint Server 2010 installation :VM-DEV6

  1. Run the SharePoint 2010 pre-requisites. This would install all the pre-requisites by downloading them from internet. (Make sure you have internet connection). I had used sharepoint2010d\setupadmin to install SharePoint Server 2010.
  2. Run the SharePoint 2010 installation wizard.
  3. When asked for database account and name enter DB as VM-DEV5\MOSSINTRA and the account as sharepoint2010d\sharepointadmin
  4. Enter the central administration port as 8080
  5. There would not be any SSP install but you would need to start the service application
  6. Configure the mail server by providing correct credentials for incoming and outgoing email settings. Use the mail4.mydomain.org as the mail server.
  7. Start the necessary services you plan to use in the Service Applications from the Central Administration V4
