User Profile Synchronization SharePoint 2010 stuck at starting !!!. All you wanted to know about it!!!


  1. Clean the certificates from the certificate store(for the user account(the farm admin account ) & My Computer Account) .

  2. Stop the SharePoint timer service and the SharePoint admin service from Services Console.

  3. Delete the xml files from Programdata\microsoft\shared\config
    and updated the cache.ini to 1

  4. Run the stsadm -o execadmsvcjobs

  5. Start the timer service and the admin service

  6. Check the permissions for local admin for Farm account and the disable loopback check

  7. Found the TCP chimney was enabled on SharePoint server. (netsh int tcp show global)

  8. Disabled it (netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled )

  9. Disable the proxies enabled on the server.

  10. Restart the server.

  11. Create the user profile service application  

  12. Check the registry in HKLM controlset001 controlset002 currentcontrolset and found the databases were populated correctly.

    Controlset001: FIMService, FIMSynchronizationService

    Controlset002: FIMService, FIMSynchronizationService

    Sometimes if it creates an entry make sure it looks like CurrentControl001

    CurrentControlSet : FIMService, FIMSynchronizationService

  13. Start user profile synchronization service after 15 mins the user profile synchronization started. 

    Do an iisreset
  14. Manage Service Applicationsà User Profile Service Application  
  15. Create Synchronization Connections

  16. Click on "Populate containers" and Select the domain user ie. Domain –>Users and click Ok
  17. Open the FIM client from D:\Program Files\Microsoft Office Servers\14.0\Synchronization Service\UIShell\miisclient.exe
  18. Watch on and see when the profile is completed.

    In my case, the problem was: The account I logged-in to configure User Profile Sync was not a Farm Administrator account!

    I followed the troubleshooting guide, which lists all possible causes and solutions at: User Profile Service Stuck on Starting
